Welcome to Energy Matters, an e-publication on behalf of the West Haven Energy Commission. The site focuses on West Haven’s ongoing commitment to energy conservation throughout the City. This interactive site provides information about energy matters and encourages the City, West Haven residents and visitors to communicate about better ways to conserve energy. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reminds us that environmental responsibility is everyone’s responsibility. Thanks for your participation.

Energy Matters to West Haven: Loans Available to West Haven Home Owners

In anticipation of the colder months, the Community Development Administration (CDA) is offering a program to assist homeowners with energy-saving projects. The loan program offers interest-free loans for up to $20,000 for such eligible projects as window replacement, furnaces, boilers, doors and insulation. Single-family, owner-occupied homes and condominiums are eligible for the loan program. Applications are available in the DCA office on the second floor of City Hall, 355 Main Street. For details, call Housing Specialist, Thom Reilly, 203.937.3550 between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays.

If the project is not related to energy savings, CDA will review qualifying candidates for rehabilitation loans, which have reduced rates between 0 and 1 percent and are repayable over 10-15 years. Consistent with programs offered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, all current regulations and guidelines will apply.

BRIGHT IDEAS
Hazardous Waste

This Bright Idea subject is a result of Citizens letting us know that e-waste information was helpful but, what about other hazardous waste? What is hazardous waste? Is it useful? Haz-waste is any product that is corrosive, flammable, toxic or reactive such as paint thinner, propane cylinders, nail polish, herbicides, etc. Today’s incineration treatments of these products not only reduce the amount of haz-waste but also generate energy through gases released in the process. Turn these potential threats to health and the environment into positive energy. Take your hazardous waste to HAZWASTE CENTRAL behind the Regional Water Authority and meet Opie, the opossum. This facility serves residents of West Haven and surrounding towns – Saturdays – 9AM to noon. A visit to HazWaste Central is quick, easy and free. Participants never have to leave their cars!

Help reduce the carbon footprint and remember the 3Rs of Green Living: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Today’s “Bright Idea” is compliments of HAZWaste Central, EPA & The West Haven Energy Commission

We welcome questions, suggestions and your Bright Ideas for energy conservation.
