Savin Rock Fireworks
July 3
Bradley Point Park
More than 100,000 revelers young and old flock to our 3 1/2-mile coastline to see southern Connecticut’s largest Independence Day fireworks show. Before the display, which is simulcast to patriotic anthems, dance the night away at the Savin Rock bandstand from 7–9 p.m. http://www.savinrockfireworks.org/index.html
Farmers Market
Runs July 8 through October 30
Thursdays, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
Saturdays, 10 a.m.– 2 p.m.
West Haven Green
The quaint Green evokes a New England marketplace where passers-by can handpick from bushels of native fruit and vegetables and specialty goods. Sponsored by the University of New Haven, the semiweekly market is anchored by merchants and vendors of the West Haven Business Association. http://www.ct.gov/doag/site/default.asp
Savin Rock Festival
July 29- August 1, 2010
Old Grove Park
The 27th annual festival commemorates the legacy of the bygone Savin Rock amusement park. The four-day event is a beacon for “Rock Rats” seeking a taste of the past, complete with a midway of carousel rides, arts and crafts, entertainment and food stands serving up the cuisine — shore dinners, split hot dogs, frozen custard — that catapulted The Rock to notoriety.
Italian Street Festival
TBD- September
Lower Campbell Avenue to Captain Thomas Boulevard
Lower Campbell Avenue cooks up a festive setting steeped in the smells and tastes of Italy in honor of our deep-rooted Italian heritage. The fifth annual block party is kid-friendly with face-painting artists and other arts and crafts. Food, treats and entertainment line the streets from Captain Thomas Boulevard to Blohm Street, turning the neighborhood into Little Italy.
Apple Festival
TBD- October
West Haven Green
Rain or shine
The fifth annual festival, hosted by the First Congregational Church, celebrates the days of yore with arts and crafts, food and entertainment. Other activities include an apple pie bake-off, an auction, a pumpkin-decorating contest, bake and book sales, carousel rides and hayrides. The 5.3-acre Green is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a hallmark of the generations of townsfolk it has served as a meeting place and park.
Breast Cancer Candlelight Vigil
TBD- October
West Haven Green
Rain or shine
The candlelight vigil is part of our ongoing campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer, one of America’s leading causes of cancer death among women and men. The public ceremony is presented by the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Committee.

The City of West Haven has been lauded by "BusinessWeek" as one the "best places to raise your kids." Noting that West Haven is home to the University of New Haven and is about five miles from Yale University and offers easy access to Bradley Point Park beach and the Sandy Point bird sanctuary, the publication narrowed the list of towns using the following weighted criteria: affordability; school performance; number of schools; household expenditures; crime rates; air quality; job growth; family income; museums, parks, theaters, and other amenities; and diversity.
