Welcome to Energy Matters, an e-publication on behalf of the West Haven Energy Commission. The site focuses on West Haven’s ongoing commitment to energy conservation throughout the City. It’s purpose is to provide information about energy matters and encourage the City, West Haven residents and visitors to communicate about better ways to conserve energy. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reminds us that environmental responsibility is everyone’s responsibility.

In celebration of National Recycling Day…
the West Haven Energy Commission provided West Haven school system with 450 recycling surveys. Our purpose is to highlight the importance of recycling and the benefits it has on our environment, energy conservation, preservation of natural resources and cost savings for the City. Did you know that it takes 1050 recycled milk jugs to make a 6 foot plastic park bench or that 1/3 of all trash is some form of packaging? That recycled fleece jacket you are wearing uses 25 plastic soda bottles as raw material. So, stay warm and as the holiday season approaches, remember that 1/3 of all trash is some form of packaging that can be recycled.
Bright IdeasENERGY MATTERS CONTESTTest your recycling knowledge by filling out the attached survey and share your “bright ideas” or tips on better ways to recycle and preserve energy in West Haven and we’ll recycle your idea by printing it under the “Bright Ideas” section of the EnergyMatters site.Contact us via email or put in EnergyMatters drop box on second floor of City Hall, Human Resources Dept. EnergyMatters@cityofwesthaven.comBackground:In June 2008, the West Haven City Council committed itself to supporting 20% clean renewable energy use for our public facilities by the year 2010. To assist the City in achieving this important goal for our community, the West Haven Energy Commission (WHEC) was formed. As an incentive for this commitment, the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund’s (CCEF) Clean Energy Communities program rewards our city with a 3kW solar photovoltaic (PV) energy system for every 200 West Haven households that sign up for the CTCleanEnergyOptions program available through United Illuminating. The PV systems lower our reliance on fossil-fueled generation and lower expenses. As of April 2013, everything energy can be found on one site, http://energizect.comTo sign up for clean energy and help West Haven earn free solar panels, see links below. After you print out the form and fill out the information, please drop the form in the Energy Matters box located in the HR department on the second floor of City Hall. If you have any questions, please contact the Energy Commission at EnergyMatters@cityofwesthaven.com
