Mayor’s Message
As a life long resident of West Haven, I’m very grateful for the privilege of serving as Mayor of this great City. Our newly created Economic Development Task Force shares the vision of making West Haven a better place to live and work.
This Task Force is convinced that West Haven has the potential to be one of Connecticut’s premier coastline cities and is committed to continuous improvements to our economic future.
Situated conveniently on Interstate I-95, in Connecticut, West Haven will attract more visitors and give commuters great access to places of employment and destinations. From New York to Boston, improved accessibility will attract new growth opportunities.
Greatness begins with innovative thinkers and leadership. We must be realistic; this community is too great to accept development projects merely for the sake of development. We need to strategize when it comes to economic development and ensure that city planning in the future is aimed at improving the lives of all citizens. As the Mayor of West Haven, I will work continuously with Federal and State leaders, universities, major corporations, local businesses and community leaders to establish new growth opportunities that will improve our City and the future of its citizens.
With renewed energy and effective leadership, we will focus on economic development that reduces the tax burden on our residents, recruit companies that bring employment for residents that will enable them to support a family, and insist on development that is representative of our shoreline community’s charm and preserves our undeveloped shorefront.
Our future is limited only by the limitation we place upon ourselves. The road ahead will be exciting and challenging, and we will continue to work hard to be successful.
Please feel free to contact me at anytime at John_Picard@cityofwesthaven.com or by calling the office at 203-937-3510.
— Mayor John M. Picard

The City of West Haven has been lauded by "BusinessWeek" as one the "best places to raise your kids." Noting that West Haven is home to the University of New Haven and is about five miles from Yale University and offers easy access to Bradley Point Park beach and the Sandy Point bird sanctuary, the publication narrowed the list of towns using the following weighted criteria: affordability; school performance; number of schools; household expenditures; crime rates; air quality; job growth; family income; museums, parks, theaters, and other amenities; and diversity.
